Issue 57 – October 2016 – QUEEN MARGARET CALLING

One of the highlights of the annual QMC calendar is

the Middle School Community Fair.

Every year Neptune Playground is transformed into

a bustling market with a range of delicious hot food

and home baking on sale.

Middle School students (Year 7 to Year 10) are

responsible for organising and running the fair stalls

and all proceeds go towards the year group’s respective

charities.

From all the cupcakes, nachos, pizza and fortune

telling sessions that were sold this year, students raised

$3249.90 altogether.

The Year 7 cohort used the $543.60 it raised from the

Community Fair to donate to the SPCA, in addition to

blankets, toys, newspapers and food.

Year 7 students have been doing workshops with the

SPCA throughout the year to learn more about animal

body language and how they can continue to support

the work the SPCA does.

Year 8 students raised $449.10 from the fair, which

will go towards buying presents for families in need for

Wellington City Mission’s Pack the Bus Appeal.

In addition to supporting the Pack the Bus Appeal,

the Year 8 cohort has also collected coats for the

Wellington City Mission Coat Drive and collected cans

for Ronald McDonald House.

Year 9 students raised $1,871.60 for the Refugee

Family Reunification Trust, of which $1433.20 was

raised from the fair.

Former refugee and current President of the New

Zealand National Refugee Youth Council Daniel

Gamboa, from Columbia, came to speak to the Year

9 cohort about his upcoming visit to a Immigration

Detention Centre in Thailand this year.

The students gave Daniel small hygiene items, such

as toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap, and letters of

hope they had written to give to the refugees.

The Year 10 cohort raised $823 from the fair for

Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand and is planning more

fundraising activities for this charity later this year..

Year 10 students also took part in Plant a Tree Day

this year by helping plant 400 native trees in Central

Brooklyn as part of Wellington City Council’s Plant

Two Million Trees initiative.

In Term 3, Year 11 students baked and delivered

home baking to the residents and staff of Rita

Angus Retirement Village in Kilbirnie, while Year

12 and 13 students have been busy throughout the

year supporting a number of charities, including

Samaritans, the Child Cancer Society, Cystic Fibrosis,

Heart Kids, Mary Potter Hospice and St John

Ambulance.

In Term 4, the Junior School will be raising money

for the Mary Potter Hospice by taking part in a school

Aquathlon.

This initiative, which has become an annual event,

will be organised by the Year 4 class and will be a great

opportunity for our junior students to give back to a

charity which supports many people within the local

community.

SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY

From the Junior School to the Senior School, Queen Margaret College students

have been involved in active service, a fundamental element of the International

Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

ACTIVE SERVICE: Year 9 students present Somalian

refugees Rosa and her son Natan with blankets and

goodies.

COMMUNITY MINDED: Year 11 students presented

baked goods to the residents and staff of Rita Angus

Retirement Village.
