This year Queen Margaret College welcomed former
students from 1936, 1946, 1956, 1966, 1976, 1986, 1996,
and 2006 back to school.
The weekend began with tours around the College
and morning tea before the Old Girls joined current
students for the traditional Old Girls’ Assembly and
Banner Service.
Principal Carol Craymer spoke about the first
Old Girls’ meeting and first Old Girls’ Weekend
documented in the College yearbooks,
Te Karere.
“These yearbooks not only show the history of
Wellington and the College but show the development
of girls’ education over time,” Carol said.
“Many things have changed but you will notice our
spirit is still the same.”
Old Girls’ Association President Lynne Speight said
it was lovely to have Old Girls return to the College,
and made particular mention to the oldest Old Girl
returning, Margaret Black.
Lynne discussed some of the exciting developments
within the College and how the Association continues
to be active within the school community.
“Things are just getting better and better.”
Lynne told current students that they were the
foundation of the College and that one day, they would
be Old Girls themselves.
“To be an Old Girl is wonderful – there is a huge
network of wonderful women.”
After the assembly everyone gathered for a delicious
lunch followed by the traditional Old Girls versus Year
13 Netball Game.
The Old Girls were too good for the Year 13 squad
this year, winning the game and the Sandra Bacon
Shield.
