It is with much sadness that we note the
passing of,
Katherine (Katie) Hammond
1989 – 1992, House: Berwick
Won prize for Academic Achievement in
Year 9 and Year 10, went on to became a
nurse.
Margaret Jackson (nee Armour)
1932 – 1936, House: Stirling
At school in the 30s for secondary. Her
Father was Headmaster of Wellington
Boys College. Her daughter Sally Ross
and grand-daughter Stephanie Ross both
followed in her footsteps and attended
QMC.
Joyce Miller (nee Brown)
1927 - 1932, House: Unknown

and Senior Scholar in 2010,
Nina Powles has published
her debut book,
Girls of the Drift
, which
features poems about real and fictional
women from New Zealand history and
literature. The book includes poems about
Katherine Mansfield, Jessie Mackay and
Blanche Baughan. There is a poem on the
first and only female lighthouse keeper,
Emily Bennett,
Pencarrow Lighthouse
.
Queen Margaret College even gets a
mention through the poem,
Ghosting
,
which talks about the school’s ghost.
The first edition released in December
was limited to 100 hand-bound and
numbered copies. The College was
thrilled to be gifted a copy, which will be
available in the Library for all students to
read.
Last year Nina was the editor of
Salient Magazine, the well-known
Victoria University student magazine. She has now completed an Honours degree in English
Literature and Chinese from Victoria University of Wellington. This year she is starting her
Masters in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters.
