Issue 55 – February 2016 – QUEEN MARGARET CALLING
T
he Junior School ended last year on a high note raising
a record amount for the Mary Potter Hospice from its
Aquathlon Fundraiser.
Girls from Year 4 – 6 swam the length of Thorndon Pool before
hitting the streets for a 1km run to raise money for the Hospice. For
the first time Year 1 – 3 girls also took part in the annual fundraiser
with a Duathlon held at the College.
The Year 4 students had a particularly special role in organising
the event, creating race packs and holding a prize giving and
barbeque for the hungry Aquathletes after the race.
Eimear Fitzgerald and Amelia Taylor say, despite the weather,
the event went off without a hitch and everyone enjoyed themselves.
“It was a nice feeling to raise money for the Hospice,” Charlotte
Mears adds.
Aquathlon Angels
Raise Over $3000
The Hospice will use the money raised by the girls to buy much-
needed equipment for patients’ day rooms.
Following the Aquathlon, the Year 4 Strawberry Angels also
sung for the local community at the Mary Potter Hospice Strawberry
Festival held at Midland Park – complete with costumes created by
parents and teachers.
Year 4 Teacher Jane Heather-Sclater says raising money for the
Hospice has special meaning for the girls because many of them
have known a relative or family friend who has required the Mary
Potter Hospice.
Competing in the Aquathlon in groups is also a great team
building exercise, Jane adds.
“The girls have an opportunity to push their boundaries and
build resilience.”
