Issue 54 – October 2015 – QUEEN MARGARET CALLING

O

pen to Japanese learners, the competition was fierce with

40 students from Wellington participating across the year

groups.

In the Year 10 category, Antonia King and her entertaining

speech on the Beatles placed first, while Rebecca MacPherson was

awarded third place with her speech on J-pop and K-pop.

In the Year 11 category, Jiaru Lin also impressed with her speech

on the humanoid singer persona Miku Hatsune and won first prize.

Jiaru Lin was surprised to win and says public speaking has

never been her strength.

She entered the competition in hopes of gaining more confidence

and experience in public speaking.

Jiaru has always had a passion for the Japanese culture but only

Queen Margaret College students were a cut

above the rest at the Wellington Regional

Japanese Speech Competition.

Excelling in

Japanese

started learning the language last year.

“I am very grateful to be studying Japanese in such a great

environment and I am now considering taking Japanese as one of

my classes for the International Baccalaureate Diploma next year,”

Jiaru comments.

She believes Japanese is important to learn because Asia is

having an increasingly larger impact on New Zealand.

“Being amulti-cultural country as NewZealand is, it is important

for young people to be interacting with different languages and

cultures in order to understand them, which is why I think Japanese

is a key language to learn.”
