Issue 54 – October 2015 – QUEEN MARGARET CALLING

From the Board

B

y now many of you would have heard the news about the up-

grade of the Craven Science Labs. And yes - to all you Old

Girls who were here in the 1970s and 80s - these are the same

‘labs’ you used! In fact, for those of you who remember the Craven

Library (as seen in the picture below), this is one of the rooms which

will be converted into a new Science Lab with the removal of the

original mezzanine floor being part of the work.

Since the beginning of the year, the College has been investigating

this project with the aim to provide cutting edge facilities for our

young scientists. As with any plan, the more we looked into the

refurbishment options, the larger the job became and the Board has

accepted the recommendation of Carol Craymer that the overall

project include the installation of a Sprinkler System and re-roofing

of the whole of the Craven Block. The sprinkler installation will

occur this year (Craven Block is the only part of the school where

these did not exist), while the re-roofing project will be scheduled

As the College moves into the last Term of 2015, during which we will complete the new

Pre-School building project, our strong roll has enabled the Board to further support initiatives

aimed to improve the education our students receive.

for next year.

The increased scope of the project has meant that the cost has

increased. However, learning and the health and safety of students

are always a priority at this College. To assist with the financing

of this work, I am delighted that the Foundation Trust, supported

by the Parents’ and Old Girls’ Associations, are running an eGala

with money raised going towards the refurbishment of the Craven

Science laboratories. You can learn more about the eGala on the

back page.

If you are in a position to support

the refurbishment of the Craven

Science labs, please contact the

project are greatly appreciated and

can be tax deductible.

Last term, the Board farewelled

Vince Galvin from the Board after

completing his term as one of the

Parents’ Association representatives

on the Board and we have welcomed

Christian Carter as his replacement.

I would like to thank Vince for

his contribution to the Board and

also to the Parents’ Association

over many years. I am told that he

will reluctantly make available the

position of security detail at future dances but may retain his various

costumes and accessories as a memento!
