He has also participated in research through the University of Auckland, contributing to greater understanding of Becker muscular dystrophy. FINDING STRENGTH IN PASSION From the 2012 Archives Nicholas Brockelbank is an inspirational ten-year-old boy who has created several of his own cookbooks to sell to raise funds for charities. Nic lives with muscular dystrophy and was the 2012 ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Scholastic New Zealand were inspired by Nic’s story and have teamed up with Nic to produce a Nic’s Cookbook , containing some of his favourite recipes. Nic and Scholastic NZ are donating half of the royalties from sales of this book to the MDA. When it comes to navigating healthcare, Nic considers himself fortunate. “I’ve had a good experience with the New Zealand health system,” he says, noting the support he receives from specialists including his cardiologist and endocrinologist. Looking back on his journey so far, Nic’s story is one of resilience, determination and finding opportunities where others might see barriers. Whether in the kitchen, on his bike, or supporting his community, he continues to demonstrate that living with Becker muscular dystrophy does not prevent someone from pursuing their passions and building a fulfilling life.
