Neurological news: Exciting events Our calendar of fascinating public events was still evolving as we went to print. Please check neurological.org.nz/events or phone 0508272467 (0508BRAINS) for the latest listings, and to register. LONG-TERM IMPACT: What does concussion really do to our brain? Tuesday 3 June, 7.00pm, via Zoom Each year, thousands of Kiwis experience concussions. Emerging research shows that these injuries can lead to serious, long-lasting effects, including neurodegenerative conditions like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Join Dr Helen Murray as she shares her groundbreaking research on how concussions affect brain structure and function over time. This FREE digital event offers insights into one of our most pressing neurological questions. FIND US AT FIELDAYS The Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event is being held June 11-14th at Mystery Creek, Hamilton. For the fourth year in a row, we’ll be sharing brain health information with the rural community. Concussion is on everyone’s mind, so we’re teaming up with a range of experts who can chat with people about their concerns. Representatives of the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research, Otago’s Brain Health Research Centre, Headway, the TBI Network and the Migraine Foundation will be at our stand next to the giant inflatable brain at the Hauora Taiwhenua Health & Wellbeing Hub across three days. If you have any brain-related questions, we’re here for you! Headlines 3 PAYING IT FORWARD: Sustaining our research community Our Head of Research, Dr Sarah Schonberger, has highlighted the funding gap faced by neuro researchers across the country (page 2). Sustainability is critical. Without it, New Zealand will lose researchers to greener pastures and vital work will grind to a halt. One way you can help is to consider including a gift in your Will. It’s an act of kindness that could help change the lives of future generations. Our wonderful supporter Carine Dobbinga has already taken this visionary step. When a friend left Carine a gift in their Will, the generosity was paid forward. “I donated to various causes and included the Neurological Foundation for the first time,” says Carine. She knows the struggle faced by talented world-class scientists in New Zealand. “There’s so much work to do, and so few resources. I’m in awe of researchers' commitment.” After being a loyal supporter for 13 years, Carine is including a gift in her Will to the Foundation. “I’ve left money with gratitude and hope,” she says.
