Dr Balakrishnan Nair From small to big - it all adds up Travel grant $4,500 Dr Balakrishnan Nair from AUT’s National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neurosciences (NISAN) traveled to theWorld Stroke Congress 2025 in Barcelona. He shared NZ-led research with neurologists, nurses and researchers from around the world, and linked with international experts to begin shaping joint studies and pilot projects that will directly inform howwe deliver stroke prevention. “This travel grant turned a conference trip into a practical working journey: from papers to real plans with hospitals and health systems. I’m deeply grateful to the Neurological Foundation and its supporters for making this possible, and for investing in early-career researchers who are trying to turn neurological research into real-world prevention.” Project grant $299,906 Migraine is a common neurological condition that affects around 753,000 people in NewZealand. It causes significant pain and disability, impacting people’s work, family and social life. International research shows that migraine is often misdiagnosed and mistreated. This study, led by the University of Otago’s Dr Fiona Imlach, will use national health data to understand who is missing out on appropriate migraine diagnosis and treatment in NZ. This information can then be used to improve migraine management, reduce hospital admissions and enable further research. “This grant provides the opportunity to dig deeper, to find out who is missing out, and what we can do to help.” Numbers in ‘000s Alzheimer’s disease & dementia $2,421 Brain inflammation $999 Cerebral palsy $986 Parkinson’s disease $852 Rare genetic disorders $838 Brain injury $820 Migraine $499 Stroke $317 Addiction $299 Neonatal seizures $290 Mood disorders $272 Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) $241 Multiple sclerosis $211 Spinal cord injury $200 Preterm brain injury $188 Pain $124 Brain cancer $20 RESEARCH FUNDED Does not include work enabled by funding of Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank &Chair in Clinical Neurology.
