3 Building impact to benefit us all “There’s no agencymore focused on funding neurological research than the Neurological Foundation.” Distinguished Professor Cliff Abraham, a world-renowned Otago-based expert in the mechanisms of memory, has long recognised the impact of the Foundation’s work. Now, approaching retirement, he’s been reflecting on its role over the past five decades. “Neurological Foundation funding is absolutely critical for releasing the brakes on neuroscience research, and enabling the transformative studies this country needs,” he told us. “We need you nowmore than ever.” Thepast year has been tough for our research community, but there’s still plenty to celebrate as you turn thepages of this report. Bright young scientists have entered the field, while experienced researchers have pushed ahead with innovative ideas. Some have achieved world-leading breakthroughs; others have made quiet, steady progress. Meanwhile, clinicians have used their deep understanding of patient need to inform research of their own, bridging the gap between theory and practice. We’ve reached more people than ever before with our educational events and videos, school-based engagement and workplace talks, spreading health messages and inspiring Kiwis to take an interest in their own brains. An ever-widening range of collaborations across communities, across the nation and across the world have been game-changers. This report focuses on impact made in the 2024/25 financial year. However, much of what you’ll read about is ongoing, and every story is part of something bigger. As a supporter, you’re a crucial part of the story. Our best and brightest continue to work tirelessly, aiming to make a difference for us all. It’s a huge team effort, and it can’t happen without you. For now, let’s celebrate the past year, and look to a brighter future.
