This year I had the privilege of becoming Chair of the Neurological Foundation Council. I want to thank Professor Cathy Stinear for all the work she did before me, and for her seamless handover. I’m also grateful to Council members for their ongoing support. It’s possible that our community barely noticed the change, and that’s a good thing. Stability is vitally important in all that we do. The long-standing work of the Foundation goes hand-in-hand with the enduring trust and belief of our generous donors and bequestors. Because of you, we’re able to keep investing in the kind of brilliant science that’s featured in the following pages. The Foundation is one of very few channels of funding for neurological research and education. Your consistent support has helped us ride out economic volatility and stay the course. We’re even looking to grow investment in coming years, and I know the research community across New Zealand will seize the opportunities on offer. Page 11 offers a snapshot of conditions that are currently being studied. Of course, there are many more. One in three Kiwis will be affected by a neurological condition in their lifetime – which is why this work continues to be so vital to our nation’s wellbeing.
