13 A First Fellowship is awarded to Dr Maize Cao. She is investigating how the instructions from brain cells to create proteins are altered by protein clumping in MND. Dr Swanson receives a Philip Wrightson Fellowship, a small project grant and a training grant to create a model of living human microglia that can be used for research into how microglia contribute to brain cell death in MND. Dr Stanley speaks at an NF-funded public event in Napier. “The highlight for me was the amazing turnout. I was almost swamped by people asking questions afterwards. I think the overall interest and commitment from the public shows how relevant MND clinical research is, and how important it is to try and bring more clinical trials to New Zealand.” Dr Alan Stanley “We need to know if microglia help or harm other brain cells. The greater our understanding of what’s happening in the brain, the closer we are to a cure.” Dr Molly Swanson, researcher 2023 $487,251 from NF Feb 2024 Years ahead “Our team gives our sincere thanks to the wonderful Neurological Foundation supporters who enable us to research with, and on behalf of, New Zealanders with motor neuron disease.” Dr Emma Scotter
