10 From small to big – it all adds up Imagine if you had a cough that just never went away – a cough so bad that it could make you faint. People with the genetic neurological disease, CANVAS, have that sort of cough – and there’s no known treatment. Associate Professor Richard Roxburgh , a neurologist at Auckland City Hospital, along with Ms Juno Barnett Collins, supervised trainee doctor Mr Rory Burnell in a $15,000 project researching whether a drug used for chronic cough in other diseases can treat the CANVAS cough. Could a new immunotherapy promote a resilient brain by working on receptors in other organs? And could it be effective in treating Huntington’s disease? Associate Professor Debbie Young and her team have been awarded $291,428 to find out. Project grants both small and large are vital to support the neurological research community inNewZealand.
