14 | InTouch WINTER 2023 Tripping around Tasmania MICHELLE SMITH SHARES HER STORY OF HER FIRST POST-COVID ADVENTURE IN TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA There were good bits and not-so-good bits, but overall our trip was a lot of fun. FEATURE In February 2023, Blair and I headed off on our first overseas trip since the advent of COVID. With the virus still prevalent we wanted to be close to home and be in a country whose health system we could easily negotiate, if required. We decided on Tasmania, with a population of approx 545,000 and only a 4-hour direct flight from Auckland. Having been to Hobart before, we were keen to see other parts of the island. During our 2-week holiday we covered about 2500km and stayed in great, and not so great, accessible accommodation and had some great, and not so great, Sitting on the cliff walk at Freycinet Park. experiences. We saw a lot of the island and stayed in Bothwell (central highlands), Wynyard (north-west coast), Barnbougle (north-east coast), Bicheno (east coast) and Hobart (south). Space does not permit a full account of our adventures, so I have picked the highlights. I love researching and planning a trip and spend hours and hours checking out accommodation, activities, and eateries. I do use online reviews and tourist information but have found that sometimes there is a bit of over-sell and disappointment
