FEATURE For many of our members, it’s the small everyday things that prove the most challenging. Everyday tasks like getting to the letterbox, making a cup of tea or visiting a friend outside the home that many take for granted. Not only are our members faced with physical limitations in completing everyday tasks, but for many there are monetary limitations too. Unfortunately, government funding for members and their whanau can be hard to obtain and getting approval for small things is even harder. Our members apply to the Bradley Jenkin Memorial Fund for funding towards things like a hot water dispenser for a cup of tea because the muscles in their hands are too weak to fill a kettle, or for travel hoists in a vehicle so parents can take their wheelchair bound child out of the house to appointments. Lois Peters, from Kaiapoi, is one member whose life has been transformed with the help of a grant from the Bradley Jenkin Memorial Fund. A keen gardener, Lois enjoys being able to sit outside and enjoy the sight and smells of her garden. However, she only had one access path on the lawn from her house to her garden which was uneven, sloped and meant in winter her wheelchair got bogged down.
