AUTUMN 2025 InTouch | 1 I hope you had the opportunity to take a well-deserved break over the holiday season and have returned feeling refreshed, relaxed, and recharged for the year ahead. As we step into another exciting and eventful year, we remain committed to supporting, connecting, and advocating for our incredible community. As I write this, I am en route to a coffee group in Auckland, eager to catch up with members and hear about their experiences firsthand. These coffee gatherings are such a valuable way to stay connected, providing a space where stories are shared, challenges are discussed, and friendships are strengthened. Whether you are a long-time attendee or have never been to one before, I encourage you to check out the news pages in this issue to find details on a coffee group near you. There’s something special about coming together in a casual setting to connect, support, and uplift one another. In this issue, we take an in-depth look at Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) , the most common of the muscular dystrophy conditions. Many of our members live with DMD, and we recognise the importance of raising awareness and providing up-to-date information on the condition. On page 12 , you’ll find a comprehensive review covering key aspects of DMD. We hope this feature will be FROM THE DESK Trevor Jenkin National Executive Chairperson Welcome to 2025 and our first issue of In Touch magazine for the year! Kōrero with Trevor both informative and empowering for those affected by the condition and their loved ones. The photo on front cover of this issue is of a member, Stacy Spence, who sadly passed away early 2024. I was lucky enough to meet Stacy who, at 46, was our oldest member with DMD. It was a privilege to spend time with Stacy and his parents, Vicky and John, during my trip to the South Island last year. Like many charitable organisations, we recognise that the year ahead will present challenges. With ongoing changes in the health and disability sectors, coupled with economic pressures, we are carefully navigating our path forward. However, we remain steadfast in our mission. I hope you enjoy this issue of In Touch and find it insightful and inspiring. As always, we welcome your feedback, stories, and contributions. Here’s to a year of connection, resilience, and shared success!
