12 | THE REVIEW MAY–AUG 2022 My journey with Māpura Studios Confidence comes from being creative and expressing herself through art. By ALLYSON HAMBLETT I have been going to Māpura Studios for about 20 years now, as an artist, and I also work there as a Disability Advisor. (Allyson is pictured opposite.) I have Cerebral Palsy and never knew I could paint until I discovered Māpura. I still love creating. Māpura began with a focus on visual arts, but now provides other ways to be creative. There are about 15 artists with Cerebral Palsy, and we all enjoy the opportunities that Māpura have given us to lead creative lives. Māpura Studios provides people with opportunities to be creative. From visual arts to art therapy, cartooning to music to singing, there’s always a way for people to get involved and enjoy themselves. I really enjoy the music class, where we are encouraged to play whatever we like, but the sounds have a way of coming together into great pieces of music. I like portraiture, urban and landscapes.
