Driving research into Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi We’ve had several great highlights over the 2023-2024 year, and I am delighted to share a small portion of these with you: • The Society played an important role in navigating the unexpected changes to the Whaikaha funding, which deeply affected members of our community. • We are collaborating with the Carers Alliance (a 60-member organisation) to develop formalised recognition of the unpaid caregiving workforce. • In partnership with the Cerebral Palsy Register, we are designing and developing a New Zealand-specific CP Toolkit focusing on 0–5-year- olds – with the capacity to build similar versions for subsequent age groups. • We are working collaboratively on several new Cerebral Palsy-related research projects, such as; respiratory and dental health for tamariki and rangatahi; designing pain scales and measures; trialing a pain passport resource for tamariki and rangatahi in the hospital and community settings; exploring interventions for anxiety management post-surgery. • We are helping design the 2025 Australia and New Zealand Cerebral Palsy Strategy. This focuses on equity, research, advocacy and making systemic change in the healthcare system. • We are maintaining our commitment to ministerial From our Chairperson and General Manager Clare Williams General Manager Daniel Clay Board Chairperson Cerebral Palsy Society celebrating success in the 2023-2024 year advocacy and policy initiatives aimed at enhancing access for individuals with Cerebral Palsy – Hōkai Nukurangi. • We have responded to topical issues of national importance, such as the 2024 budget release and its potential implications for people living with disabilities. • We are always looking for efforts to advocate for changes at the local government level, particularly in relation to council matters, including Long Term Plans, as well as contributing to considerations like making recycling more achievable and accessible for people with disabilities. We are proud of the Cerebral Palsy Society team as they continue their commitment and hard mahi to make sure that these projects, and many others, reach their full potential.
