Broadway hit wows QMC was one of the first schools in Wellington to put on the spell-binding production of Into the Woods featuring over 70 musical numbers. Our major school production Into the Woods blewaudiences away in April. Withmusic and lyrics by Stephen Sondheimand book by James Lapine, Into theWoods follows the story of a baker and his wifewho are desperate to have a child andmust break a curse to achieve this. Along theway, theymeet a variety of beloved fairy- tale characters, eachwith their own problem to solve and curse to break. The school production had 50 cast members fromQMC, Scots College, St Patrick’s College andWellington High School. The showwas directed by award- winning director, actor and international improviser Patrick Davies, withmusical direction by Head of Performing ArtsTim Jenkin. “ Into theWoods was a show I had considered for a few years for our school. This year, we had an incredibly rich pool of talent to drawon at QMC, particularly inYear 13, ”Timsays. “Also, it seemed appropriate to choose something of a challenging and complex nature for our centennial production.” With two sell-out shows, Into the Woods proved to be a fan favourite. “To see theway the students took ownership of their roles and the show Into the Woods wowed audiences in April. as awholewas heart-warming and inspiring,”Timsays. “I began to get excited after a flowing and entertaining run-through at the dress rehearsal. The actual performances grew in stature over the season to a highly professional production. Overall, I am immensely proud of the students and the whole team.” Drama Prefect Eleanor Burns played theWitch and enjoyed putting together the large-scale production. “I think this was the biggest productionwe have ever done,”she says.“Everything came together really well, it was incredible.” LIVE 52 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 63 :: May 2019
