LEADING Introducing our new uniform Queen Margaret College is excited to announce the introduction of shorts and trousers to the Middle and Senior School uniform. FromTerm 4 2018, students have been able to wear the school skirt, shorts or trousers with the rest of their full school uniform on any day. The new pieces were created by NZ Uniforms after students approached Principal Jayne-Ann Young at the end of 2017 wanting to see more uniform options that reflected the school’s diversity. Year 9 student Maya Elmes wears the school trousers and says she prefers them because of their comfort. “I had never felt completely comfortable wearing the skirt. I was always too hot or too cold and wasn’t as confident as I could have been. I got the pants as soon as was reasonable and was the first in my year to wear them,”Maya says. “I am in both the Honours Band and school orchestra, and it is a lot more practical to have pants while playing my instrument. Even just sitting in the classroom is more comfortable than before.” Year 11 student Sasha Gunn was an early adoptee of the trousers. She says the main reason she began to wear themwas to keep warm in the winter terms. “When I was in Middle School, I was freezing in the winter, even with long socks on, so I started wearing the pants as soon as I could get my hands on them,” she says. “I’m part of Chorale, and we have rehearsals for about three hours a week. As part of our set, we sometimes warm up or perform with choreography. “Wearing pants makes this experience so much easier. Even when we’re just rehearsing words, managing the constant sitting and standing with pants is a lot easier than it was in the skirt.” Left to right: Zamantha Robinson, Zara Kant and Maya Elmes in the three uniform options available to Middle and Senior school students. 30 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 63 :: May 2019
