How our artists work From photographers to designers, painters to printers, we have had so many talented artists at QMC from the very beginning. In 2019 Senior students can take visual arts subjects in both NCEA and the IB Diploma. Students are also encouraged to follow their passions and enter competitions outside school. LEARNING Betty Sladden On loan from the family of Old Girl Elizabeth “Betty” Sladden is a very special art project from the 1930s. Betty attended Queen Margaret College from 1928 to 1932. Her ideas for the school uniform are noted in a fashion project from circa 1931–1932. In it, Betty detailed her ideas for everything from badges, to hats, to dresses and overcoats. Each drawing is accompanied by notes of her ideas and a piece of material she aspired to use in the final product. Little is known about why Betty created this fashion project; however, it is a fascinating piece of QMC history and shows the fashions and priorities of the time. Betty was a member of Braemar and an active participant in school life. Te Karere magazines from her time show that Betty was active on the sports committee, in netball, in the Girls’ Club and in speech competitions. Betty was Chief Librarian and FormVa Captain in her final year. Her younger sister Mary was Head Prefect in 1935. Betty returned to Queen Margaret College to teach Art in the 1940s before marrying and moving to Malaya (nowMalaysia) with her husband. 25 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 63 :: May 2019
