CENTENARY College Hall From the 1940s, QMC began to fundraise for new buildings and facilities to accommodate a growing number of students. One of the most notable structures from this time is the College Hall, which opened in 1955. Fundraising was done by staff, students and Old Girls and the hall was officially opened on 20 September 1955. Students were especially excited to see a hall big enough to hold Juniors and Seniors at the same time. It has since been used for parents’ afternoons, Old Girls’ teas, music and drama evenings, the House Performing Arts Day, assemblies, school dances and prize-giving ceremonies. The building replaced the original Aitken House, which was destroyed by fire in 1996. John Aitken House features stained glass windows fromMowai House, a former QMC building and occasional Junior School home from the 1960s to the 1980s. The building was officially opened on 15 February 1999 by Sir Michael Hardie Boys. Today the building hosts special events, drama productions and our Year 6 classes. Pivac Wing PivacWing, the four purpose-built classrooms on the side of the Old Hall, was opened by former Governor– General Dame Sylvia Cartwright in 2006. The wing was designed to complement the refurbished tower, which had reopened the year before. As part of the opening celebrations, a time capsule was buried, to be dug up in 2056. The time capsule joins other artefacts found during restoration of the tower block and can be viewed in the history window between the Old Hall and the ground floor of PivacWing. In 1987, the original Clayton house was demolished so work could begin on the Irene WilsonWing, a classroomwing built in the style of the historic buildings. The IreneWilsonWing was officially opened in February 1990. It is now the home to many classrooms, the Junior School and the school library. It was considered a “pinnacle achievement” for the College by the Board of Governors. Craven Wing One of our main classroomwings, the John B. Craven Wing, was opened in 1972. Named after the Board Chair of the time, the wing housed laboratories, the film room, music and language rooms, the art room and the school library in its early days. The official opening took place on 16 July 1972 and was attended by parents, Old Girls, staff, students and friends of the school. It was opened by New Zealand Prime Minister John Ross “Jack”Marshall. 15 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 63 :: May 2019
