The Student Centenary Committee is made up of six Senior School students: Ashley Chandra, Bridget Olphert, Siobhan Murray, Rosa Findlay, Isobel Scherf and Brooke Raitt. The group was formed last year for students to have a voice on the College centenary celebrations. Plans include a school centenary hoodie, merchandise and, most exciting of all, ice cream for students to enjoy on 19 February, QMC’s 100th birthday. “We wanted to do ice cream because everyone loves ice cream and it’s something different. Not many people create their own ice-cream flavour. Plus it was a great opportunity for summer,” Siobhan explains. What is the Student Centenary Committee, and why ice cream? For Brooke, there was a more important reason behind the decision to create an ice-cream flavour. “Ms (Jayne-Ann) Young talked to us about what we could do for the birthday celebrations in February, and I told her I was always sad on the birthday because everyone got cake but I couldn’t have any because I’m gluten-free,”Brooke says. “For us, this special ice cream is more inclusive as it’s gluten and dairy-free and vegan so everyone can have it.” Isobel worked at Zelati ice-cream boutique over the summer holidays and collaborated with the company to bring the flavour “Old-fashioned lemonade with a blueberry swirl” to life. This included placing almost 1,000 ice creams into biodegradable packages ahead of the big day. She says the hardest part of the task was keeping the secret from other students ahead of the event. “It was really hard to keep the ice cream a secret, but we wanted it to be a really special surprise for students on our school’s birthday.” CENTENARY Year 12 student Isobel Scherf with the QMC ice creams.
