CENTENARY Bubbles, birthday cake and even a special ice cream for staff and students marked Queen Margaret College’s 100th birthday. Students made the most of the centenary event, dressing up in uniforms from the school archives to greet their classmates with bubbles as they arrived at school in the morning. Staff and students shared traditional chocolate birthday cake to mark the occasion and a special assembly provided an opportunity for current students and Old Girls to come together. During assembly, Treasurer of the Old Girls’ Association Jane Ball invited everyone to reflect on the legacies of the school and its students as she read from the 1919 Yearbook. Principal Jayne-Ann Young shared stories of former students, including a school project by 1930s pupil Betty Sladden. The project contains Betty’s ideas for the QMC uniform, complete with drawings, fabrics and notes and has been loaned to the school for the centenary. Head and Deputy Head Prefect Lucy Poole and Ashley Chandra presented a “Then and Now”of life as a student. Using memoirs from Sally Chao (néeWhitehead), a junior boarder in the 1940s, as an example. Students were fascinated to hear how different things were, particularly the lives of boarders and what the school buildings were like. It’s safe to say, however, that the fierce inter-house competition has not changed much. There was another surprise treat at lunch: “Old-fashioned lemonade with a blueberry swirl” ice cream QMC celebrates 100 years Head Prefect Lucy Poole, Year 11 student Florence Snep, Deputy Head Prefect Ashley Chandra and Year 8 student Sadie Dundon. 10 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 63 :: May 2019
