6 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 The eldest Junior School students celebrated the end of their primary school years with the Year 6 Exhibition in Term 3. Students invited friends and family to celebrate the hard work they had put into their projects under the wider Primary Years Programme Unit of Inquiry “HowWe Organise Ourselves”. Groups studied and proposed action on the housing crisis, fashion waste, food education, health care, animal testing on makeup, gun laws in the US, air quality, food waste, women’s suffrage, child poverty and fair trade. Head of Junior School Kathleen McDonnell says the Unit explored societal decision making, the structure and function of organisations and economic activities, and their impact on the environment. “As part of the investigation process students contacted people working in the relevant sector. Many students found meeting the professionals the highlight of the projects,”Kathleen explains. Audrey Kung, Neve Dunlop, Sofiya Smirnova and Pyper Lancaster- Heatherwick named their group project “Fashion–Friend or Foe”. The team visited The Formary on The Terrace to aid their research into fashion waste. The Formary turns old clothing into new fabric which can be reused. “We learnt about some of the systems they used including reusing material and encouraging people to buy less and choose sustainable products,” Pyper says. Grace Bicknell, Lucy Fulljames, Saskia Moore and Mikayla Wratt investigated the Women’s Suffrage Movement around the world because of their shared interest in history and women’s rights. “Kate Sheppard and Emmeline Pankhurst inspired us during this project because of their strong beliefs and bravery throughout their journeys,” Lucy says. For their exhibit the group took photos of themselves in different scenes of women’s history, including being jailed and force-fed. YEAR 6 EXHIBITION JUNIOR SCHOOL LEARNING YEAR 6 EXHIBITION Gabrielle Dunphy shows students her project. “The Exhibition process requires students to respond to relevant and current issues,” Kathleen says.
