37 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 QMC launches SchoolTV Dedication to the wellbeing of students has led Queen Margaret College to be one of the first schools in New Zealand to launch SchoolTV. SchoolTV is an online wellbeing resource that aggregates information on a large variety of topics to help parents navigate the issues youth of today are facing. Every month parents are able to access a new wellbeing topic and view interviews with specialists on that particular topic. Topics include eating disorders, social media and digital reputation, and are discussed by leading Australian psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. QMC is the third school in New Zealand and the first inWellington to sign up to the wellbeing resource. Our wellbeing programmes are student-centred and we work in partnership with our families to help educate resilient women,” she says. QMC launched SchoolTV to staff and parents on Monday 17 September and then hosted a Principal’s Symposium to introduce the resource to school leaders the following day. Founder “Having investigated SchoolTV, we believe there is no other resource like this currently available in New Zealand. We are so excited to be the first school inWellington to make this fantastic resource available to our families,” Rena says. James Wilson and Dr Carr-Gregg were onsite to introduce parents, staff and principals to SchoolTV. Dr Carr-Gregg says research suggests the mental health of New Zealand students is deteriorating. He believes it is “vital parents are equipped with skills, knowledge and evidence-based strategies to build wellbeing and resilience” in their children. “SchoolTV provides precisely that in the form of easy to digest, bite-sized reliable and accurate packets of information,”he says. The symposium gave educators the chance to come together and discuss challenges young people are facing. Rena says she is pleased with how principals engaged with the symposium and SchoolTV. “It was a privilege to share this resource with our community,”she says. OUR COMMUNITY WELLBEING
