31 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 Four Middle School students showed off their book knowledge in Term 2, winning the Regional Kids’ Lit Quiz and qualifying for nationals. As part of the competitionYear 8 students Pascale Bowie, Maya Elmes, Florence Bartram and Anna Schofield -Matthews had to answer 100 questions on books, stories and literary terms. The team entered barely a week before the regionals and say they were shocked to win the round. “We never thought we were going to win so we were very surprised,” Florence says. They prepared for the nationals with School Librarian Jude Grogan. “We had weekly practice sessions and answered questions that were used previously in Kids’ Lit Quizzes and also brushed up on some general book knowledge,”Pascale says. “Plus we had a lifetime of reading to help us,” Florence adds. The group came 12th in the National Kids’ Lit Quiz. “We were happy with how we placed as the structure was very different to what we were used to and the questions were very challenging,” Pascale says. “Each question could only be answered by the first person to buzz out of all the schools instead of everyone who knew it claiming the answer like in regionals, so you had to be very fast.” The Kids’ Lit Quiz is an annual literature quiz for students aged 10–13 years old. Quizzes are held in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom and USA.
