28 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 WINTER SPORTS TOURNAMENT WEEK Some of our sports teams headed across the country for Winter Sports Tournament Week in September. Basketball, football, hockey, netball, underwater hockey, swimming and skiing teams competed in various tournaments around New Zealand. First XI Football defied all expectations in the Grant Jarvis Cup inWhanganui. The teamwon almost all of their games and made the finals, losing narrowly to Tawa College, 2–1. Tawa scored the winning goal in a penalty shoot-out. QMC walked away from the competition with a silver medal. Senior A Netball and Senior A Basketball competed in tournaments in Palmerston North. Our netballers headed into tournament week after winning the Premier 2 final against St Mary’s Old Girls 3, 56–36. After a fierce tournament the team finished in the Top 16 in the Lower North Island. Senior A Basketball came 4th in their regional competition. Earlier in the term they made the final of the College Sport Wellington Senior Girls Premier and were narrowly defeated by Hutt Valley High School. First XI Hockey competed in the Aon Federation Cup inWhangārei. The team finished 16th in New Zealand at the end of the tournament. Underwater Hockey competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schoolgirls UWH Championships in Rotorua. The team finished 10th in New Zealand. Eight QMC swimmers competed in the Swimming New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships. The swimmers made up two teams and competed in several Under-15 age medley and freestyle relays, finishing 12th in New Zealand. The top QMC swimmer at the event was Pippa Nicol. She won a silver medal in the Under-13 age 200m Freestyle. The Senior Ski team competed at the North Island Secondary Schools Competition. Harriet Norris received the top QMC skiing result and finished 15th in the Junior Women’s grade. We are so proud of our teams for their joint and individual successes in the pool, courts and fields this winter sports season. The silver medal winning First XI Football team.
