27 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 One of Queen Margaret College’s top netball players Paris Lokotui was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball team. “It felt surreal to be named in the national team. Knowing that you’re one of the top netball players in the country for your age is really cool and something that every sportswoman dreams of,” Paris says. Paris is no stranger to netball success. She was part of the BEKO Netball League earlier this year and played for the tournament winning Central side. Paris was also selected for the National Development Camp in January and was selected for the NZSS team from there. “We had a five day trial where we tested our fitness, trained and played multiple games over the five day period. The selectors had also watched the rep and BEKO seasons as well as school games,”Paris says. The teamwill play for the first time in Canberra this month against the Australian U17 and England U17 sides. Unfortunately, due to injury Paris is not able to compete in Australia with her team this season. Although she is disappointed to not be joining her team this time, Paris says she looks forward to being able to train and trial again next year. Paris says her favourite thing about netball is the way it challenges her both mentally and physically. “Netball teaches you so much more than just how to play the sport itself.” MAKES NATIONAL TEAM NETBALL STAR LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM SPORTS
