8 Queen Margaret Calling :: ISSUE 62 :: October 2018 Year 5 students fundraised for the Emmanuel Community School in Cambodia through a special Market Day. Year 5 teacher Jane Harris says the idea to hold a Market Day came from student Gloria Tay during the Rights and Responsibilities topic of the “Who We Are” PYP Unit of Inquiry. “She investigated the rights of children around the world and how we can make a change to help others,” Jane says. Gloria discovered her grandparents founded the Emmanuel Community School in Cambodia for under- privileged children. The school provides free education to impoverished children who may not otherwise attend school. Gloria asked her grandparents to come into school and talk to her class about what the school is like. “We decided as a class to raise money for books for the Emmanuel Community School Library and asked Gloria’s grandparents if they could take the funds to Cambodia when they went in June,” Jane says. “Gloria wrote up an action plan for Market Day and presented it to Principal Jayne-Ann Young and the Prefects. She organised her classmates to meet in the school holidays to decide on what to sell. The students baked and sold bracelets made by the children in Cambodia.” Students were delighted to receive an email from the school with photos of their new and improved library. They had the opportunity to see how their actions helped other children their age from another country. Jane says the students felt very lucky to be able to help others and were pleased to see the difference they had made. Emmanuel Community School Library.
