22 Getting connected for learning We use the latest education research and technology to ensure our students learn skills for their future and that learning occurs in the most effective way. All students fromYear 6–13 require a laptop for school and are expected to bring it fully charged each day. This allows our students to safely access resources, complete classwork and communicate with the Queen Margaret College community. Purchasing your laptop Parents are responsible for purchasing a laptop for their daughter and the ownership of the device will stay with the child. For recommendations on purchasing a laptop visit qmc.school.nz/myqmc Setting up your laptop An email will go out late January detailing your login information and access to software downloads from our download portal. There will also be a day allocated before school starts for you to come in if you are having any IT issues. At the start of the year there will still be laptop ‘set up’ sessions where all new students will activate their e-folio and OneDrive as well as setting up their subject folders and running through the basics of computer usage, care and management. Internet safety and ethics will be covered at the outset, and other aspects of digital citizenship will be addressed over the course of the year. Technical support If the laptop has met the requirements provided and has not had its default connection settings altered, the school’s IT Centre will be able to provide an internet connection. This will include a web-based printing service. While our technical staff will endeavour to support students with any connection issues, they cannot perform hardware repairs to students’ laptops. The same applies to troubleshooting if the laptop’s default settings have been drastically altered. Insurance Insurance is the responsibility of parents. You should ensure your child’s laptop is covered under your home insurance arrangements. All Year 6–13 students are expected to provide a padlock and are issued with a locker to store valuables in, when necessary. Network Acceptable Usage Policy All students and parents will be required to read and sign our Network Acceptable Usage Policy on enrolment.
