A Pathway to Hope: Ryman Event Series Dunedin 6 May 2 PM Dr Lucia Schweitzer Frances Hodgkins Ryman Retirement Village 40 Fenton Crescent, St Clair, Dunedin Lucia Schweitzer is a neuroscientist researching Alzheimer’s disease at the Biochemistry Department at the University of Otago, Dunedin. Lucia received her Master’s and PhD degrees in Molecular Biology from the University in Vienna, Austria. In 2012, she joined a team of researchers around Professor Cliff Abraham in Dunedin who is investigating the mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease and are exploring therapeutic avenues. Hamilton 20 May 2 PM Ms. Laverne Robilliard Hilda Ross Ryman Retirement Village 30 Ruakura Road, Hamilton East Laverne is currently a second year PhD student based at the Centre for Brain Research at Auckland University. She received the W& B Millers Postgraduate Scholarship from the Neurological Foundation in 2017 to carry out research looking into how Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) tumours regulate the immune system. GBM is currently an incurable brain tumour that is highly aggressive. For successful treatment, she needs to understand how these tumours ingeniously re-program our own immune systems against us, and hopefully combat this from occurring. What better way to show your support during MND Awareness Week this year than to host a Cuppa Tea for MND event? MND New Zealand Fundraising Manager Kate Dalders says, “MND Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness and educate people about motor neurone disease.
