DECEMBER 2022 InTouch | 5 NEWS ROUNDUP one part of the solution to improve the lives of disabled people. We need continued input, cooperation, and leadership from many people in different organisations and communities, all of whom have their own expertise to contribute. It is vital that all parts of the public sector continue to take responsibility, in their respective domains, for improving the rights and wellbeing of disabled people just as they currently do for different population groups. I am excited to continue this work with my colleagues across the public sector. Many disabled people fought hard to make Whaikaha a reality, and the success of our organisation really matters to our community. It matters to all New Zealanders from an equity perspective, and as a disabled person myself it really matters to me. The first time I joined my colleagues at a full meeting of public service Chief Executives, I was struck by the significance of having a disabled person at this table. The voices of more disabled people are needed at many tables, such as Parliament, local government, business and the public service. Representation matters. As we build Whaikaha, empower communities to drive change and support barriers coming down across the whole system, we have an opportunity to make a significant difference. I want people with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions to tell me what your community wants to see in the future, and what you expect from government agencies. Nobody knows their disability better than a disabled person themselves, so it’s crucial we understand your perspectives. I know there’s a diverse range of experiences within your community and a one-size-fits-all approach will not give you what you need. We want to get as many relevant voices around the table as we can, and ensure every voice is heard. For more information visit the Whaikaha Ministry of Disabled People’s website www.whaikaha.govt.nz I look forward to working with the Muscular Dystrophy Association on this journey. We need to make the most of this moment in time and I’m full of hope about what we can achieve.
