26 Issue 60 – October 2017 – QUEEN MARGARET CALLING This year QMC entered a Junior and Senior team in the Wellington Underwater Hockey competition with great results. A Year 6 – 8 mini-league team was also entered in several games in the Wellington mini-league competition throughout the season. The Junior squad of nine won the Junior Girls Division 2 category in the Wellington Underwater Hockey competition with a 8 – 0 final over Wellington High School. The Senior team came 4th in the Senior Girls Premier 1 grade following a narrow loss to Hutt Valley High School. UNDERWATER HOCKEY Underwater Hockey has continued to grow at Queen Margaret College this year with teams attending a number of tournaments. Both teams played at the Underwater Hockey Central Zone Secondary School Championships in August. The Junior team came 7th and the Senior team came 5th in their categories, resulting in a trip to Nationals at the end of September for the Seniors. Senior team goalie, Laura Christie, says the highlight of the 2017 season for her took place at the National tournament. “My highlight was when our team competed against our biggest rival team – Hutt Valley High School. They beat us all season, but we finally beat them 1-0 in the most amazing game I have ever seen our team play,” she says. Laura has been playing Underwater Hockey for QMC since she was in Year 6. “My favourite thing about playing underwater is that it is such a different sport and it’s something that not many people have heard about. I also love the mix between swimming, playing hockey and holding your breath,” she says. The Senior Underwater Hockey team came 8th at Nationals and from the tournament nine students were selected to trial for the U18 Wellington team.
