I
n 2005 the College Board of Governors had the foresight to
establish the Foundation Trust with the mantra ‘to ensure a
secure and vibrant future of the College and pupils of Queen
Margaret College.’
Dr Allan Freeth, Board Chair at the time, was delighted to have
Old Girl Carolyn Henwood step forward and drive the Foundation
Trust as Chair. Carolyn enthusiastically brought to the position
her wisdom and her passion for quality female education in order
to champion philanthropy within the community to assist the
development of the College.
Over the past ten years Carolyn, along with Jay Benton and Paul
Baines as the permanent trustees, have together ensured a thriving
future for Queen Margaret College, seen most recently with the
completion of the Hobson Complex. Total fundraising has exceeded
$1 million, from donations of all sizes through to events – who of
those who attended this year’s Celebrity Debate will forget how well
Carolyn performed as the sole Henwood family representative that
night (having had to tuck son Dai up in bed with the flu!).
I advise thatCarolynHenwoodand JayBentonhavebothresigned
from the Foundation Trust
and on behalf of Carol
Craymer, the Board of
Governors
and
greater
College community, I offer
our collective gratitude and
thanks for their immense
support of the College.
I am pleased to advise
that QMC Old Girls and
current
parents
Jane
Woodrow (as Chair) and
Diana Marsh will step onto
the Foundation Trust to
work alongside Paul Baines
and Nigel Bingham and the
QMC Board representatives.
Our incoming trustees will
look to continue the work
of the Foundation Trust,
including supporting the
latest building development of
a new Pre-School.
The Pre-School re-build
is set to start before the end
of Term 4 and will include a
redevelopment to the grounds
surrounding the Junior School. I look forward to the opening of
this new facility part way through 2015. In the interim, we will be
making some configuration changes to the Junior School but expect
that any disruption will be minimal. The resulting purpose-designed
facility will be a great addition to the College and the ground
redevelopment will include the exciting addition of a slide access to
the back playground. The continued strength of our roll gives the
board confidence as we embark on this project.
On the matter of Board changes, I advise that, in order to further
her studies in Christchurch as a teacher, Emma-Jayne Turner
has recently resigned as President of the Old Girls’ Association
and member of the Board of Governors. It is with pleasure that I
welcome Lynne Speight on to the Board as President of the Old
Girls’ Association and I look forward to working with her.
Elsewhere in this QMCalling you will read stories of the
successes of our students and about the myriad of sporting and
cultural activities that our students have available to them. I am
loathe to pick out one success over others but, when we look to create
future leaders, it is especially pleasing to see our results at the NIWA
Wellington Regional Science and Technology Fair. Science and
innovation is getting focus from the government and our students
are showing that they can be a key part of NZ’s future.
Paul Foley
It is with a sense of some sadness, but also of a job well done, that I
note recent changes to the trustees of the QMC Foundation Trust.
