16 History of QMC rowing QMC started rowing in 1990 and in 1991 we attended our first National Secondary Schools Rowing Champs at Twizel. 1994/1995 Season As part of QMC’s 1995 crew who attended the National Secondary School Rowing Champs held at Twizel, Amy Churchouse was entered into the U17 and U19 Single and in both events she qualified through to the A Finals. In the U17 she placed 2nd winning the silver medal and in the U19 she place 3rd winning a bronze medal. Also during the 1995 season the U19 4x+ (as it was then) won a top ten medal for placing within the top ten nationally rated U19 4x+ crews. 2002/2003 Season Sarah Press medaled at the College Nationals and successfully trialed for the Rowing New Zealand U18 North Island Team. 2003/2004 Season Johnny Johnson, then Head of Rowing took his U15 Quad to Twizel and the National Secondary Schools where they placed 2nd in the A Final winning the silver medal. The crew members were stroke Jess Sutton, Laura Davies, Hannah Shilson, Emma Foley, Marcia Gawith coxswain. Apparently the weather was so cold and atrocious that the medal presentations were held in darkness. 2009/2010 During their 2009 season competing in the U16 double Ruby Tew and Meg Taylor-Smith were entered into the U16 2x at the NISS Champs where they blitzed the field winning every race, including the A Final. They won Gold and became the North Island U16 2x champs in 2009. At the Maadi Cup a few weeks later they again made the A Final and where faced off against the South Island Champs St. Kevins but were beaten by a Southland Girls crew. QMC gained the bronze. In the 2010 season Ruby and Meg raced the U17 2x at the NISS Champs where they placed 3rd and won the bronze medal. 2017/2018 Season In the 2017/2018 season the crew of Jessie Rongen, Ruby Treadwell, Harriet Norris, Mollie Nicol, and coxed by Emma Green, placed 3rd and won a bronze medal at the NICC competing in the Women’s intermediate coxed four. During this season they were coached by Roy Pickard. In the 2017/2018 season Mila and Mollie competed and won Gold at the North Island Secondary Schools Champs (NISS) in the Under 15 double sculls and won QMC's first Gold at National level in the same event at Maadi Cup in Twizel. Mila and Mollie are currently the National title holders of the Girls Under 15 double sculls. 2016/2017 Season During the 2016/2017 season a Novice combination crew coached by Bella Smolnicki and Olivia Treacy placed 3rd and won Bronze at the North Island Club Championships (NICC) in the Womens Novice Coxed Quad Sculls and a few weeks later placed 2nd and won a silver medal at the North Island Secondary Schools Champs (NISS) in the Girls under 18 Novice coxed four. The girls competing in these two crews were Teneka Te Moananui (cox), Jessie Rongen, Ruby Treadwell, Harriet Norris, Mollie Nicol and Mila Van der Wilt.
