The remarkable SPORTS HUMAN BRAIN BANK The Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank (NF HBB) was set up almost three decades ago to enable researchers to work with families to advance neuroscience, and to facilitate better therapies for neurological diseases. This remarkable partnership with families affected by brain diseases has given them – and thousands of others – hope through research for the next generation. F acilitating brain donation from generous New Zealanders and providing human brain tissue to hundreds of research groups has enabled many important discoveries. Three years ago, an extension of the NF HBB was set up to focus on brain donations from sports players. The New Zealand Sports Human Brain Bank is a collection of tissue from donors who have played contact sports, whether or not they have experienced a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI), reflecting a growing international focus on brain diseases associated with repeated head impacts. The Neurological Foundation has been the major funder of the Human Brain Bank since it began. In 2019, we pledged $2.2m to fund the Brain Bank for five years. We've recently renewed the agreement for three years beyond 2023, costing $1.98m. 8 Headlines Professor Maurice Curtis and Distinguished Professor Sir Richard Faull at the Neurological Foundation Human Brain Bank.
