ANNUAL REPORT 2020 | 17 Rallying for a cause Sue and Malcolm Stewart Hawke's Bay Sue and Malcolm Stewart have been regular givers of the Neurological Foundation since 2009. Interest in the Foundation sparked when in 2008, Malcom was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Malcolm sadly passed away in 2009, and Sue has been carrying on his memory and passion, as well as her own, ever since. “Donating to the Foundation was just the logical thing to do” says Sue. Sue has lived in Hawkes Bay since 2004. Previously, she owned a 2600-acre farm in Dannevirke, where Sue’s parents are from, but decided to sell the property in 2004 to move to Haumoana in Hawkes Bay. For Sue and her family, neurological research has become so important to them. Sue shared with us what she hopes her regular donation can do for those who are living with a neurological condition. “It’s important to try and find a treatment, if not a cure for some of these hideous diseases… that treatment may make their lives a little better, and [to bring] some hope for the future.” A Donation of Hope William Robins Waikato William Robins is a proud supporter of the Neurological Foundation and has directly funded three Summer Studentships, two of which were funded in 2019. He currently resides in Tuakau where he has lived for over 20 years. He has been a proud donor of the Foundation for over two decades and has lived all his life with poor eyesight and tinnitus, a condition that affects the ears and hearing. It became clear to William why it was so crucial to support and donate to organisations like the Neurological Foundation when he was told by doctors to “turn up the radio” for his bad hearing. Our supporter's stories Throughout the 2019/20 financial year, we received over 32,000 donations from passionate and generous supporters. We are grateful for your continued support and dedication to funding neurological research. This year we would like to highlight three special supporters for their donations throughout the year. We hope you enjoy reading about their reasons for giving, just as much as we have. As well continuing Malcom’s legacy through her monthly donation to the Foundation, she also shows her support through rally car racing. She manages a rally car with Malcolm’s old crew and driver, who was a good friend of Malcolm’s. “The car has the MND (Motor Neurone Disease) and Neurological Foundation logos to help promote awareness of these diseases. We have a lot of fun while doing something we all enjoy and promoting great causes. ” We’d like to thank Sue Stewart and the Rally Car Team for their continued support of the Neurological Foundation in memory of Malcolm Stewart.
